Construction of Denny's Hut

While several people contributed to the construction of this hut, two or three people can build one in a short time, using minimal tools, once the basic knowledge and skills are acquired.

In this case, Electricity for the electric drill and Skill saw came from the solar charged inverter on a motor home that served as quarters for the crew, during construction.

The main frame was built first, then the floor, then the walls were sheathed, then the roof.

Roll roofing was applied with a generous coat of tar below. Green wood stain and sealer was applied to the outside wood surfaces, the inside was painted with latex.

The door was built and installed, screen stapled around the window areas, polyethylene sheeting attached to the top of the windows (to be rolled down for cold or wet weather) and a thorough application of love was applied to the entire structure.

Sand and rocks were placed all around for drainage.

Denny's Hut under Construction

Silver Springs, Florida - 2003

All of the struts were marked and cut.

Holes were drilled in the ends of all the struts.

Bolts were inserted into the holes

The frame was erected.

Washers and nuts held the struts in the Star Plates.

The walls were first.

Then the roof struts were bolted in place.

Then the floor was framed.

Plywood applied to the floor frame.

Screws were used, not nails.

Corner floor detail.

Siding was then applied.

The scaffold was moved occasionally.

Then the roof was sheathed.

Denny practiced gymnastics on the  scaffold...

and then smiled.

Corners were cut off the roof sheathing after screwing it down.

One person would hold the wood and the other place the screws.

Lots of sand was shoveled onto the site to fill in the holes where the rain settled.

Roll roofing was applied with a generous coat of tar.

2 coats of oil stain/sealer were applied to external wood surfaces.

The door was built and installed, screen stapled around the window areas, polyethylene sheeting attached to the top of the windows (to be rolled down for cold or wet weather) and a thorough application of love was applied to the entire structure.

The inside was painted with latex.

We then celebrated.
